Bone Injury and Fractures

Did your baby suffer from a bone injury or fractures during child birth?

The following bone injuries may occur at birth: broken clavicle, thigh bone and skull fractures, and elbow injuries. According to some reports, 35 cases of bone injuries at birth occurred at least once out of every one thousand babies born. Clavicle fractures are the most common types of birth injuries occurring.

According to statistics, 2% or fewer neonatal deaths and/or stillbirths occur pursuant to bone injuries or fractures during childbirth in the US. Nonetheless, it happens sporadically, on average about six out of eight per thousand births.

Goldberg & Osborne are here to help resolve legal claims involving injuries or fractures resulting from childbirth.

What is a Clavicle and why do these fractures happen?

The clavicle is another name for the collarbone, located in the upper arm. It is the bone structure that connects the arm to the body, from the chest bone to the shoulder blade, on each side of the body.

When a baby is born, he or she passes through the vaginal part of the mother. If this area is too narrow, the head is constricted. Clavicle fractures can take place when doctors administer certain procedures to help with the delivery.

How are these fractures determined and treated?

A number of tests can determine a clavicle fracture and other types of bone injuries. Bone, computerized tomography and magnetic resonance imaging scans can be performed to diagnose bone fractures in newborns, and x-rays can be used to determine breaks on bones. All these technological procedures are used to take images of a baby’s bones.

Treatments can involve medications, splints or slings, ice packs and physical therapy and/or surgical procedures.

Can I see signs of clavicle fractures in my newborn?

Sometimes the signs of bone fractures are very evident but not always. The main symptom with bone injuries or fractures is pain, and the infant might seem to struggle when attempting to move his or her arm. By nature, babies with injuries will hold the hurt arm next to the side of his or her body and avoid moving it.

Often times, a mother will not realize an injury exists until she picks her baby up, by holding the newborn under the armpits to lift him or her. The baby will cry with pain if an injury has occurred. Bone injuries or fractures are hard to see or feel, generally. A few weeks after a bone break, a firm bump might appear where the injury is located. The symptoms are a bit different for other bone injuries and birth fractures, like thigh, skull and elbow cracks.
