Birth Injury

Did your baby have a birth injury?

Signs of a birth injury may or may not be evident at the time of birth. It depends on the situation. Additionally, there are times when evidence of injuries is not evident until months or years after the birth. The following are some signs of childbirth injuries in babies and toddlers:

• Bruising, scrape marks or swelling on the face, shoulder(s) or head of a newborn
• Seizures occurring around 48 hours after the delivery
• The body looking limp because of muscle tone weakness
• An arm remaining motionless or looking limp
• Trouble with breathing directly after birth

If defects are not determined at birth, an older baby or child could have the following signs: Drooling, muscle coordination problems, irregular way of walking, or speech troubles.

Paralysis can happen with certain forms of birth injuries and some are hard to detect right away. Others, on the other hand, are very easy to notice. Physicians are supposed to thoroughly examine a newborn and determine whether a complication caused harm to the child.

Goldberg & Osborne have 20 plus years of experience.

What kinds of birth injuries occur?

There are many childbirth injuries. Cerebral Palsy, Erb’s Palsy and PPHN (Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn) are well-known medical problems that can take place in newborns.

The following injuries and complications may occur during and after a baby’s delivery:
• Brain damage
• Severe Jaundice
• Skull fractures
• Bone injuries or fractures
• Umbilical cord strangulation
• Shoulder dystocia
• Facial injuries
• Spinal defects or injuries

On occasion, a childbirth injury can correct itself without further medical care. Unfortunately in other cases difficulties may continue and the future can hold a less positive prognosis.

If your baby suffered from a birth injury, even if it was not detected right away you may have a claim.

Was your child paralyzed, disabled, or harmed as a result of birth injuries?

Cases have been reported where doctors did not monitor pregnancies properly or deliver babies with the care demanded of them. The doctor may not have followed correct medical protocol. Many incidents may occur that can lead to mild, moderate, or severe damages to a newborn’s health. Whatever situation happened to cause injuries to your newborn child, it is worth discovering if the injury involved medical malpractice. Complications at birth can take place, but a doctor is supposed to know what to do when they arise to ensure the mother and baby’s health and safety.

If your baby was injured at birth, even if it was not immediately detected, you still might have a claim.
